WELCOME TO THE CLINICAL BURNOUT SIMULATOR
Healthcare & Clinical Burnout Alignment (LAE-SDI v1.0)
Instructions & Explanation
How to Use the Healthcare & Clinical Burnout Alignment Simulator
Use the interactive sliders below to model how patient admissions, rest shifts, workflow protocols, and compensatory emotional effort impact clinical staff capacity and care quality over a 60-shift horizon.
Simulator Controls
- Patient Load / Shift Strain (D): Emergency admissions, bed turnover rate, and administrative charting workload.
- Rest Shifts & Staffing Ratios (R): Mandatory rest windows, adequate staffing ratios, and psychological debriefing.
- Protocol Efficiency / Support (I): Team coordination, digital health tools, and streamlined clinical workflows.
- Max Emotional / Overtime Effort (Amax): Maximum emotional labor, adrenaline-driven shifts, and overtime availability.
- Fatigue Drain Multiplier (α): Depletion rate per unit of unmitigated clinical stress.
- Target Care Quality Standard (P):** Quality of care metrics, round times, and patient safety targets.
Interpreting the Results
- Clinical Drift Index (SDI): Calculates long-term clinical staff sustainability.
- Below 1.0 (BALANCED CARE): Staff rest and streamlined protocols continuously maintain clinical capacity.
- 1.0 to 1.5 (LATENT BURNOUT): Patient care quality appears sustained, but relies heavily on emotional labor, double shifts, and overtime masking underlying exhaustion.
- Above 1.5 (SYSTEMIC ATTRITION): Exhaustion reserves are spent, causing critical capacity failure, elevated medical error rates, and rapid staff resignations.
- The Dynamic Chart:
- Clinical Capacity (Pink): Underlying physical stamina, mental resilience, and healthcare worker well-being.
- Care Standard (Green): Observed patient throughput and care quality standard.
- Emotional / Overtime Effort (Dashed Amber): Compensatory emotional masking and overtime buffering capacity drops.
- Error Risk Limit (Dashed Red): The critical boundary where severe medical errors and unit collapse occur.

SDI interpretation
SDI < 1: modeled restorative capacity exceeds modeled demand pressure. SDI = 1: balance boundary. SDI > 1: modeled net capacity depletion.
